In this class, students will be introduced to the topic of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and will begin to recognize the importance of technology and engineering in today's society. They will discover what engineers do, explore the different fields of engineering, and see how STEM is important in our everyday lives.
In the first part of this course, students will be introduced to the engineering design process and will develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in the world around us. They will then be challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout various projects including a final unit where each team must design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy.
During the second part of this course, students will apply mathematical concepts and rigorous programming principles to create a simple, 3-character video game involving a player, a target and a danger. They will design what each character looks like, and use algebraic concepts to detect collisions, handle keystrokes, and determine how the characters move and interact.
I expect a lot from my students, and they should expect a lot from themselves! Although the STEM curriculum may seem challenging and different at first, the class is set up so that every student can succeed as long as they put forth the effort.
